Red Hot Horn Dawgs

The Dawg Pound

August 17, 2011

Our summer schedule is winding down and we'll be taking a little time to catch our breath before packing our fall/winter calendar. So be sure to help us say farewell to a long time member of the horn section this Saturday. Check the upcoming calendars of a couple of local establishments for possible upcoming performances and feel free to let your company know we are a pretty good choice to liven up a corporate event or holiday party.  Don't forget to visit Steve's Guitar Shop for this month's advice!

Next Three
(This will change as we set up some gigs for the fall. But this is how it stands as of 8/17/11.)

Sat, Aug 20, 6-8 PM – Portage – Music Fest
Sun, July 22, 2012 TBD – Middleton – Capital Brewery (our annual bash!)
Sat, July 28, 2012 TBD – Madison (East) – St Dennis Festival

The End of an Era

Sadly, it is time to say “so long” to an old friend and band member, saxophone Tony Klubertanz. Only two 'dawgs have stayed in our kennel longer than Tony. Over his tenure he branched out from being just a horn blower to becoming a featured vocalist and commanding stage presence. He made several tunes his own over time and we will be effectively retiring them this Saturday at the 6th Annual Music Fest at Lawton Field in Portage. This is a fund raiser for Portage schools and admission is $10. Following the Horn Dawgs will be the hot Madison cover band Honeyshot.

It should be a great evening of entertainment and we look forward to seeing you there!

Our guitar master Steve Oasen continues his crusade to share his lifetime experience of playing and caring for guitars in this month's edition of SGS.  In this issue you will learn about protecting and transporting your wood and string friend, including:
  • The six basic varieties of cases, what they're made of and what level of protection each one offers.
  • The usefulness of the luggage-type locks on some cases (or lack thereof...)
  • How to prepare yourself for air travel without getting your case ruined in an FAA search.

Upcoming Prospects and Inside Baseball

Over the past three or four years we tried to hook up with various agents and booking agencies to promote our band, find us gigs and manage/update our website. It's really a lot of work to stay current with all the local music venues, festivals, etc., and marketing ourselves for weddings and other private parties. All while juggling the personal calendars of the nine individual band members. So we tried the 21st century method of “outsourcing” those duties.

For whatever reason this strategy didn't work out as well as we had expected. A few months ago we decided the best way to take care of our band was to do the work ourselves. So we are slowly rebuilding our relationships with old friends, and trying to make new ones along the way.

As of this writing we are working with the Hody Bar in Middleton and the Harmony Bar on Atwood Avenue to come up with some play dates this fall. The Hody was a place we played a lot in our early years. We “hooked up” during the break between our sets at the National Mustard Museum a couple of weeks ago. We hope to have news about playing there soon.

The Harmony Bar would be a new venue for The 'Dawgs. Nobody is really sure why we never seriously pursued playing there in the past, but we think it's a great stage for a band like ours and we're excited about the possibility of playing in the heart of Madison's East Side!

For booking information please contact Tom Halstead. Go here to download our press kit and a sampling of some of our tunes.

Finally...

Thanks to all of you for making this past two months a rousing success for us! We had a blast at our summer bash at Capital Brewery, St. Dennis Festival and National Mustard Day. We'll see you soon—keep checking our website for updated information on upcoming shows.

Musically Yours,

The Red Hot Horn Dawgs
